Drabble Tag: firebunny & simplytoopretty invite you all to play
random {back of head}
firebunny suggested that, because I wanted to have some fun tonight, we should play drabble tag.

It's pretty simple. I'm going to post a drabble along with a prompt; that'll start us off. The goal is to write a drabble using this prompt and then post it. The first person to do this has the pleasure of picking the next prompt. The first person to write a drabble using this prompt gets to pick the next prompt. And so on.

You can still write a drabble for a prompt that someone has already answered; you just don't get to pick the next prompt. So there's a reward for writing the fastest. The goal is to have fun!

I'll start with the first drabble and prompt. When posting your drabble, please include the prompt the drabble is based on. If yours is the first drabble in response to the last-issued prompt, please include a new prompt.

Any questions, please ask.

1. Promises
2. Lies
3. Need
4. Gravity
5. Awards
6. Ashes
7. Beginnings
7a. Why
8. Crackers
9. Underwear
10. Superman
11. Leather

14. Absolution
15. Hope
16. Jalapeños - a firebunny special
17. Airplanes
18. Drowning
19. High School
20. Cooking

ETA: Four hours, 20 prompts, and 180 comments later, I'm ready to declare drabble tag (a) a success and (b) closed. You can still reply to drabbles people have written and you're free to write a drabble based on the existing prompts (because I would never deny someone the opportunity to write). But there will be no new prompting.

Title: the distance is quite simply much too far for me now

The bedroom door opens. She barely hears it, barely feels the bed dip.

“It’ll be okay,” he says.

Is it a promise? Can that even be promised?

She doesn’t turn her head from where she looks at her wedding dress. Her wedding feels like a dream now. Her time as a bride is a hazy memory, edges blurred, images fuzzy.

“Will it?”

It’s a rhetorical question; Clark answers anyways. “It will.”

“You don’t know,” she says softly. Despite everything she hates hurting him.

“I’m here. We’ll get through this.”

She says nothing. Eventually he leaves. She stays there and remembers.

Such an angsty drabble to start off with. I'm glad Clark's there for Chloe. I'm glad he won't let her rhetorical question go unanswered. Thank you for sharing (and for starting off the game of tag).

Prompt: Promises

Title: Right Where We Belong

He takes a deep breath and exhales slowly, savoring the warm air. The colors assault his eyes. After years of only white and blue, it strange to see green, yellow and red.

He allows himself another breath, but that’s it. He doesn’t have time to stand around and revel in his freedom. He made a promise. He’s going to keep it.

In the blink of an eye he’s found her, sitting at a desk on the third floor of the Daily Planet. He’ll have to ask her later how she got her job back. Right now he just wants to hold her.

“Chloe,” he says, just loud enough to be heard over the noises of the busy office.

She looks up. He has to smile at the shocked expression on her face.

“Oh my God,” she gasps. Then she’s rushing into his arms where she belongs. “You came back.”

“Well, yeah.” His smile broadens at the glistening tear in the corner of her eye. “I said I would.”

New Prompt: Lies

Awesome! I love homecomings.

Next prompt is up.

All Of Those Careful Lies

Carefully she takes off the articles she’s written that mention Clark. She wants no reminder on the wall of the articles, but doesn’t want to destroy them. She wants to preserve them: they are her legacy, for better or for worse.

She murmurs, “Why didn’t you just tell me?”

And even while she murmurs this question aloud, she knows the answer, knows why he lied to her for some many years. He lied because he didn’t trust her, perhaps couldn’t trust her, not with her insatiable curiosity. She feels like there’s no one to blame but herself. There is no one to blame but herself.

For the longest time she never trusted him to tell her eventually the truth behind the lies he has told her for years. She didn’t trust him to one day be honest.

Now she’ll wait and hope that her actions over the past few months and in the coming months will gain his trust.

She’s tired of the lies.

This was a great look into Chloe's thoughts at the end of Pariah. It was completely in character and set up so much of what happened later in the season.

Prompt: Need

Title: Compulsion

It’s embarrassing. He knows she must be aware of it, but he can’t stop doing it. He just can’t quash this need to touch her. He tries to play it off casually, brushing his hand along her back as he passes by, but this is the third time in as many minutes. It’s so obvious.

She’s kind enough to pretend she doesn’t notice. She doesn’t smile or frown, or even look up. She just continues typing.

He’s determined to stop, so he sits down a fair distance away from her and occupies his hands with the day’s edition of the newspaper.

“I’m going to get some coffee.” She stands up. “You want some too?”

“No, I’m good.” He studies the paper extra hard so he can resist the urge as she draws nearer.

And then like that her hip is bumping into his shoulder.

“Sorry,” she says as she pats his head.

Maybe she needs it too.

New Prompt: Gravity

I like this a lot. AM and TW could do this scene blindfolded... well, they've done it countless times before.

awesome drabble!

Prompt: Awards

Title: The Prize

“You like it?” Lois asks. “It looks good, doesn’t it?”

“It looks great,” Clark says.

“All the attention in the room is drawn to it,” Chloe adds.

“You don’t think it’s too much?” Lois asks, suddenly self conscious. “I’m not bragging am I?”

“You won the Pulitzer,” Chloe reassures her. “You have every right to brag.”

“All I did was interview him,” Lois says. “Superman’s the won who provided the story.”

“But it was a great interview,” Clark says.

“Confession time.” Lois looks around nervously. “I just pretended I was you, cuz. I thought ‘What are the questions Chloe would ask?’”

“You’re the one who asked them,” Chloe says. “You deserve the Pulitzer.”

Clark gives her hand a quick squeeze and runs his finger along the gold band on her ring finger.

Lois may have won the award, but Chloe got the prize.

New Prompt: Ashes

Lois won the award but Chloe won the prize!!!

Prompt: Ashes

Title: Ashes to Ashes

The minister repeats the standard words, the words always used.

Chloe recites them silently, her mouth moving, but no sounds escaping. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

It’s raining as she silently says those words, the sky crying alongside her. A hard, drenching rain and she relishes it because she couldn’t stand a sunny day. It shouldn’t be sunny, not when he’s gone, not when it’s his funeral.

She looks at his gravestone. Clark Kent, 1987 – 2009.

She thinks: Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. She thinks: this isn’t how it was supposed to end.

This is how it ended.

prompt: ashes

There are certain ideals she's always considered synonymous with her future. Some of them are words, like love and happiness, just too brief feelings passing fleetingly into the depths of forever. Some of them are places where she thought her essence would be felt even after she'd left this world behind; the Daily Planet, Metropolis, the Loft. Most are people she could never grow out of: her mother, her father, Lois, Pete... Clark. Reporting and truth were just aspects of her character she assumed would be constants, like Clark's hugs or Lois's weakness for bad men.

But she watches her future burn away with the fire in his smile he no longer aims at her but at her own flesh and blood.

And her dreams, her future, drift down to the cold December ground like ashes.

Next prompt: why?

opps I was too late and I unfortunately can't change my post!

(Deleted comment)
“Just so you know, when that gets warm, I get cold.”

ahaha!!! This was priceless and my favorite part? Clark smiled, “If Bruce ever heard your blatant disrespect of the espionage game . . .”

“What? Death by growl?”

"Death by growl" is hysterical. Oh Brucey, how I heart you!

Prompt: Beginnings

Title: First Day

“Clark!” Principal Kwan just about shouts as he makes a B-line towards the gangly teen.

All heads turn. Clark wishes that with all the things he can do, turning to air was one of them. But he has to stay solid and visible as the Principal crosses the crowded cafeteria.

“I need your help,” Kwan continues. “I’ve got a new student starting today and no one to show her around. Will you do it.”

“Show her around?” Clark asks.

“Yeah, introduce her to your friends. Make sure she gets a warm welcome.”

Clark doesn’t want to do this. He’s no good around girls. And he really only has one friend, Pete.

“Okay,” he gulps because he doesn’t have the guts to turn the principal down.

He follows the man out of the cafeteria and down the hall and two a petite and very pretty blonde girl.

“Chloe, this is Clark,” Kwan says. “He’ll get you situated and tell you everything you need to know.”

“Great,” the girl says. “Where can I get a copy of the Daily Planet?”

NEW PROMPT: Crackers

Animal Crackers In My Soup

“Why are we watching this?” Clark asked.

Chloe felt like it was more of a demand though. She stuck her tongue out at him as a result.

“Oh, that’s mature,” he said.

“I got to pick the movie. It’s my turn.”

“It’s in black and white. I didn’t sign up for a black and white movie night.”

“It’s a movie so it falls under the category of being eligible as a pick for our movie nights,” Chloe said. She tossed a kernel of popcorn at him. “It’s a classic.”

From his position next to her, he tossed a kernel back. She popped it into her mouth and smiled.

Clark continued to whine. “It has singing.”

On the screen, Shirley Temple was singing about animal crackers. Chloe joined in, making her voice loud as she sang along. She knew all the words.

“Okay, okay, I’ll stop whining,” Clark said, holding up his hands in defeat.

Chloe just smiled.

Note: I have no clue what movie this song is from. I've seen it but I don't remember.

Prompt: Crackers

Title: Lois is Baffled at Smallville

"Crackers? That imbecile gave you crackers?" Lois asked incredulously.

"And then he had the audacity to tell me to clean up the trail he left going to the bedroom!"

"Well, what did you do?"

Chloe smiled deviously, "well, I put on that little red number you gave me a few years back and my black heels..."

"And with a little female persuasion I made him clean it up... without using his powers. Let's just say Metropolis's new superhero has a weakness for the Chlovage."

Next Prompt: Underwear

Hahaha! That was hilarious!

Your muse is back for a bit I see!

(Deleted comment)
First of all, "feeling like ass" is a timeless quote. No really, I'm 89.7 percent sure my granny used to say it.

Secondly, YAY for pregnant!Chloe and Daddy!Clark. I want more!

Prompt: underwear

Clark was staring at her, his mouth open.

“What are you wearing?” he asked.

“You can’t tell?” Chloe joked, unable to resist.

She smirked. “It’s underwear, silly. Just underwear. I wear it all the time.”

“It has my face on it!”

She glanced down at the white underwear she was wearing. Over the crotch was an image of Superman. “Technically it’s an image of Superman. The face doesn’t look anything like yours.”

He glared at her. “You’re not supposed to buy Superman-related stuff,” he retorted.

“But it’s cute!”

“I hate you.”

She stepped closer. “No, you love me.”

“Maybe. But right now I don’t like you.”

Chloe laughed.

Next Prompt: Superman

Oh cute! You saw that icon Mediaville has, didn't you?

Prompt: Underwear

Title: In a Hurry

“Shit!” Clark climbed out of bed. “Shit! I was supposed to be there half an hour ago. How could you do this to me, Chloe?”

“You did it too,” she said defensively as she pulled the sheet up to cover herself. The first time they made love and this was how he reacted.

Clark stopped. “Yeah, yeah, I did,” he said backtracking quickly. “And it was great. And I want to do it again and again. But right now…” he glanced at the clock, “the Legion’s expecting me. It’s my official unveiling with the suit and all.”

“So stop dallying,” she said. “If you jump into superspeed you can be dressed and at the Hall in 2 minutes.”

“Right,” he nodded and in the next instance he had the cape and spandex on. “You were amazing.” He kissed her on the forehead. “I’ll be back as fast as I can and we’ll do it again.” Then he vanished.

“Wait… Clark…” she called, but she already knew it was too late. “You have your underwear on the outside.”

*dies laughing*

So that's why the underwear is out the outside...

Prompt: Superman

"You promised!"

"No, I didn't."

"Ugh, yes, you did!"

"Clark, would you calm down!"

He leaned in closer to her and whispered frantically in her ear. "Chlo- you, you promised that name wouldn't leave the bedroom!!"

"Did I?" She said innocently.

"Alright, alright. But, there's nothing I can do about it now."

"Then tell me this, how the HELL does Lois know about it?"

"She doesn't know I was referring to you, let alone your, you know, super penis."

"Is that all?"

"Is that all?" He mimicked, "no, that's not all, the whole world is referring to me as Superman now and ever time someone calls me that all I'm going to think about is when you-" He frowned.

"Exactly. Now whenever some damsel in distress puts her big boobs in your face," she whispered, "you're going to think of me all those times I've called you it in the past when you made me cum."
